Cawley Entertainment Company and Retro Film Studios, LLC are pleased to announce that Meng Ai will be joining the cast of “Star Trek: Phase II”, taking on the role of Lt. Commander Sulu beginning in this year’s “The Holiest Thing”, written by Rick Chambers – the twelfth episode to go before the camera in the production’s 10th anniversary film shoot.

Keeping with Retro Film Studio’s commitment to hiring professional actors to fill it’s roles, New York based actor Meng Ai has appeared in television shows such as “Royal Pains”, “30 Rock”, “How to Make it in America”, and films such as “Thanks for Sharing”, “Life During Wartime” and “Danger Island”.

Born in Inner Mongolia, China, Meng moved to the US when he was 11. He is a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts where he studied acting and directing at the Experimental Theater Wing and Playwrights Horizons Theater School.  Although he is new to the Star Trek universe, Ai says he is looking forward to the challenge of entertaining such a dedicated fan base, and is especially honored to be following in the footsteps of George Takei.

    What happen to JT?

And “professional actors to fill it’s roles” should NOT have an apostrophe in it’s!

JT was the 1st of the actors to get Sulu’s overall physical movements down correctly (witness how he got up out of the conn in “The Child” tho, like all actors in any venue so far, he had not affected Sulu’s deep, resounding voice.

In terms of character voice (not physical voice), John Lim was the only Sulu so far who was properly cheerful, as Takei portrayed the character w/an outgoing, very positive spirit.

I wish Mr. Ai the best of luck in his endeavour (or should we say, “in this enterprise?”) I also am happy that someone who actually looks something like George Takei is in the role, finally. While no one so far has looked Japanese, as Mr. Takei strongly vdoes, Mr. Ai has, by far, the closest general appearance to Mr. Takei of anyone in New Voyages/Phase2, or the Abrams reboots.

  • Welcome to the Star Trek universe, Meng.

While I realise that many people are doing an excellent job in Phase II here, nonetheless, it is a special honour to have support from people with professional training.

    Let the 5-Year Mission continue!
